Trolling Live Baits for Kingfish | Outside the Port Hacking

A full day trolling live baits with Rob in search of one fish… a legal Kingfish!

We started by heading out of Port Hacking and stocking up the live bait tank. We managed quite the assortment, with yakkas, slimy mackerel, pike and even a squid ready to go.

With the tank full, it was time to rig up and start trolling. I sent a yakka out along the surface while Rob put a slimy mackerel around 7 metres down on the downrigger.

Then we trolled…

And trolled…

And trolled some more.

Three and a half hours without a fish before we finally started getting some enquiries. Then a rod loaded up and it was game on!

Once hooked up, Rob punched the boat offshore, pulling the Kingfish away from the reef and into deeper water where I finally had a chance to fight it properly.

What started as a double hookup turned into a new 1UP Fishing channel record and my first ever legal sized Kingfish!

We weren’t finished either. I managed to land a second Kingfish before Rob got one of his own, giving us three nice legal Kings for the day.

As the sun started setting, we headed back into Port Hacking after an awesome day on the water.

A massive thank you to Rob for putting in the time and getting me onto my first legal Kingfish. Definitely a fishing milestone I won’t forget!
