Bass Fishing in 100° Heat But FALL is Already Starting

Texas is still pushing nearly 100-degree temperatures, but don’t let the heat fool you—the early fall bass fishing transition is already beginning.

A lot of anglers judge seasonal bass patterns almost entirely by water temperature. But nature isn’t controlled by one variable. Shorter days, longer nights, changing sunlight, vegetation, oxygen levels, baitfish movement and other subtle environmental changes are already taking place as we move through September.

The bass notice those changes long before we start reaching for a hoodie.

Today, I’m hitting the water in some absolutely brutal Texas heat to throw one of my favorite categories of soft plastics for this early transition: CREATURE BAITS.

We’re keeping the setups ridiculously simple—light weights, 4/0 worm hooks, medium to medium-light fast-action rods and 2500–3000 size spinning reels. You don’t need a $500 setup to catch these fish. If your rod came from a tackle shop, garage sale or pawn shop, it’ll get the job done.

I’m putting several proven creature baits to work, including the Zoom Lizard, Gary Yamamoto Fat Ika, Gary Yamamoto Kreature and Reaction Innovations Smallie Beaver.

And that old-school Zoom Lizard?

Let’s just say there’s a reason bass fishermen have been throwing these things for decades.

We’ll break down where I’m throwing these baits, how I’m fishing them, why I’m keeping the weight light and what I’m looking for as bass begin responding to the earliest stages of the fall transition—even when the thermometer says summer isn’t going anywhere.
