We Caught SO MANY Fish at Buntzen Lake! (Ultralight Fishing)

We took our new Pond Prowler boat fishing at Buntzen Lake, BC and found TONS of Northern Pikeminnow! 🎣 From nonstop ultralight action to our biggest pikeminnow of the day at around 13 inches, this turned into one of our most action-packed Buntzen Lake fishing trips yet.

My girlfriend Maggie and I finally got the chance to take our little Bass Pro Shops Pond Prowler out for a proper fishing trip!

I bought this boat a little while ago but hadn’t had the chance to really put it to use. For its first real adventure, we brought it out to Buntzen Lake in Anmore, British Columbia, one of our favorite fishing spots here in the Lower Mainland.

During the warmer months, Northern Pikeminnow can be extremely active at Buntzen Lake, especially when you locate schools of smaller baitfish. I’ve heard of some seriously big pikeminnow coming out of this lake, and while we didn’t find any true monsters on this trip, we still had an absolute blast catching some solid fish.

Well… Maggie may have done most of the catching. 😂

We originally started fishing closer to the main shoreline, but Buntzen was pretty busy and there were a lot of people around. One of the best things about having the Pond Prowler was being able to leave the crowded areas behind and explore some of the quieter shallow sections of the lake.

Our first objective was simple:

Find the baitfish.

Once we started seeing concentrations of smaller fish in the shallows, we noticed larger fish cruising nearby and feeding around them. That was our sign to start fishing.

And once we found them… the bites barely stopped.

We brought ultralight fishing setups, which made these Northern Pikeminnow ridiculously fun to catch. Ultralight gear also allowed us to throw tiny finesse presentations that matched the size of the baitfish these fish seemed to be feeding on.

We experimented with a few different baits and lures throughout the day, including PowerBait, but there was one clear winner:

🎣 Bubblegum Pink Cleardrift Trout Worms

The pink trout worms absolutely crushed it.

Our setup and technique were incredibly simple:

• Small Trout Magnet-style jig head
• Bubblegum pink trout worm
• Ultralight rod and reel
• Light line
• Slow retrieve
• A few small pops of the rod tip
• Pause when we felt the fish biting
• Give them a moment to commit before setting the hook

Our biggest Northern Pikeminnow of the day ended up measuring right around 13 inches, and on ultralight tackle it actually put up a pretty awesome fight.

The Pond Prowler also turned out to be perfect for this style of fishing. It’s small enough to sneak around shallow water and quietly explore the shoreline while still giving two people enough room to fish comfortably.

Buntzen Lake is located in Region 2 – Lower Mainland. Always check the current BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations and any in-season changes before fishing.

BC Hydro does not permit power boats at Buntzen Lake, although small battery-powered electric motors are permitted.

Alcohol and drug consumption is prohibited at the Buntzen Lake Recreation Area.

You may briefly notice a sealed bottle of alcohol in our fishing gear during the video. It was accidentally left in the bag from a previous camping trip. The bottle remained sealed the entire time and no alcohol was consumed at Buntzen Lake. We respect the rules of the recreation area and encourage everyone visiting to do the same.
