The Allegheny River Made Me Question Everything

Kayak bass fishing on the Allegheny River is never easy, and in this Keystone Bass Kayak Series tournament, we put everything we learned from four straight river events to the test. This Pennsylvania kayak bass fishing tournament turned into another grind for river smallmouth bass, but we managed to put together a five-fish limit, improve our Angler of the Year standings, and take another step forward in our tournament fishing journey.

Coming into this event, we had slowly been improving on the rivers with finishes of 30th, 15th, and 9th in our previous three river tournaments. After spending the summer learning more about current, eddies, seams, grass, rapids, river structure, and smallmouth positioning, I thought I was finally beginning to understand how to consistently catch river smallmouth.

The Allegheny River had other plans.

We started quickly with a 15.25″ smallmouth followed by a 16.25″ fish, but developing a consistent pattern became nearly impossible. Every bass seemed to be positioned differently, and what looked like perfect smallmouth bass habitat wasn’t always producing. It became one of those tournament days where every bite mattered.

We finished with exactly five bites and five fish, enough for a limit and a 13th-place finish out of 28 anglers. It wasn’t the tournament result we were looking for, but that finish replaced a 21st-place score in our Keystone Bass Kayak Series AOY total and quietly moved us another step closer to our season goals.

Four straight river tournaments. Four finishes that haven’t necessarily been flashy.

But there has been progress.

Last season, simply catching a five-fish tournament limit was a challenge. This year, we’ve posted a limit in nearly every event, cashed a few checks, won a big bass pot, and quietly worked our way into the Top 10 Angler of the Year standings in both kayak tournament series we’re fishing.

That’s what the Beginner to Winner journey is all about.

If you’re a weekend warrior, new to kayak bass tournaments, trying to become a better tournament angler, or just learning how to catch smallmouth bass in rivers, don’t get discouraged when the results don’t come immediately. Time on the water matters. Keep learning, keep adjusting, and keep fishing.

We’re not beginners anymore — but we still haven’t won one.
