High school and youth bass fishing tournaments are exploding in popularity, and getting more kids on the water is a great thing—but after seeing dead fish following a late-summer event on Lake Guntersville, I think we need to have an uncomfortable conversation about the traditional tournament format we’re teaching the next generation. In this video, I explain why youth tournaments are the perfect place to implement an MLF-style catch-weigh-release or CPR catch-photo-release format, using boat captains, standardized scales and tournament technology to immediately release bass instead of keeping them in livewells all day and transporting them to a weigh-in. This isn’t about fewer kids fishing or fewer tournaments; it’s about better fish care, bass conservation and tournament fishing, while teaching young anglers habits that could eventually change competitive bass fishing for the better.
