California Delta Bass Fishing Report – Early July to Early August

I’ve been consistently fishing the California Delta at least once a week over the past month, primarily focusing on the Central and Lower Central Delta. One thing has been consistent—the heat has been relentless.

With the hot weather, I’ve been concentrating on areas with stronger current, wind-blown banks, and matted vegetation that still has enough water underneath it during the lower stages of the tide. The punch bite has remained fairly consistent, although the timing of that bite can change throughout the day. Finding productive mats with enough water underneath them has been one of the bigger challenges. I’ve often had to cycle through the same stretches multiple times during the day as the tide and conditions change.

The topwater bite has been relatively slow for me, especially with a frog. I haven’t been able to establish a consistent frog bite, but Plopper-style baits have produced more reliably when the fish are willing to come up.

Once the tide drops out and the bite gets tough, I’ve been slowing things down. A Senko or poop-style bait has been effective for picking up additional bites, along with drop-shotting the outside edges of grass lines.

Overall, I’ve found that current, water depth, vegetation, and timing the tide have been the biggest factors in putting together a productive day on the Delta.
