Lake Pleasant Bass Fishing Report: Topwater Struggles, Drop Shot Delivers
Lake Pleasant continues to fish tough in the mornings, and this week’s Midweek Bass Anglers tournament showed just how important the drop shot bite has become. Spencer Hannah and I finished 10th with 6.67 pounds for three fish, catching seven bass overall in this three-fish tournament.
Topwater action was limited, although isolated boils still produced quality fish. I managed an early buzzbait largemouth up in the river, but most of our success came on drop shots. Thanks to tips from fellow club anglers and advice from Sean Egger, I switched to a longer leader and a Phat Pak Fin Worm in Morning Dawn. Spencer also caught fish on a Morning Dawn Roboworm.
In this video, I discuss:
• Midweek Bass Anglers tournament results
• Why the drop shot bite dominated
• Topwater struggles and an early buzzbait fish
• Why the minnow bite failed for me
• Evidence that bass may be feeding on crawdads and staying close to the bottom
• Other productive techniques including Carolina rigs and jigs
• Why afternoon fishing may be much better than the morning bite
• Why Bartlett Lake might currently offer more consistent action
Nobody really crushed them in this tournament, but you can still catch fish at Lake Pleasant if you’re willing to slow down and fish the bottom.
If you’re fishing Lake Pleasant this summer, bring your drop shot rod and don’t overlook the Morning Dawn color!
