GIANT Bass Guarding Babies at Sasamat Lake | Bass Fishing BC

Today we took the paddleboard out to Sasamat Lake for a chill bass fishing mission with my girlfriend, and the lake is finally starting to wake up.

It was a nice day, not too sunny, perfect for exploring the shoreline and looking for bass. We brought out our Bruha combos from ProFISHiency and tied on some soft plastics from ClearDrift Tackle, mostly natural coloured worms, stick baits, and some darker colours like black.

Most of the lake felt pretty empty at first, but once we started working the shoreline, fallen logs, and structure, we started finding bass tucked in close. The fish were definitely relating to cover, and the smaller bass were scattered all along the banks. My girlfriend ended up catching most of them while I was busy losing fish and dulling my hook from sending casts into the most suspicious looking tree spots possible.

The coolest part of the day was finding a massive cloud of tiny baby bass swimming along the shoreline. There were thousands of them grouped up together, and not far behind them was a giant largemouth bass guarding the school. We got some underwater footage of this big papa bass watching over his babies, and honestly it was one of the coolest things I have ever seen while bass fishing at Sasamat Lake.

We tried to fish for him for a bit, but after realizing he was guarding his babies, it felt kind of wrong to bully the big dad bass, so we left him alone and kept exploring for other fish instead.

The bass here seem to already be spawning or post spawn, and as the season goes on, the fishing should only get better. We also saw a few cutthroat trout cruising and rising along the shoreline, so we might have to come back and target those next time too.

Sasamat Lake is waking up, the bass are moving shallow, and summer fishing is about to get real good.
