Spring is one of the best times of year for bass fishing, fish are active, shallow, and feeding aggressively as they prepare to spawn. If you understand how their behavior changes through the season, you can catch a lot more fish.
The 3 Spring Phases of Bass Fishing
1. Pre-Spawn (late winter/early spring)
Bass move from deep water toward shallow areas
Focus on staging spots: points, drop-offs, creek channels
Water temp: 50–60°F
Best lures:
Crankbaits (cover water fast)
Spinnerbaits (great in murky water)
Jigs (slow and steady)
Tip: Fish transition zones between deep and shallow water.
2. Spawn (mid-spring)
Bass move into shallow water (1–6 ft) to build nests (beds)
Water temp: 60–70°F
Best tactics:
Sight fishing (look for beds in clear water)
Cast soft plastics right into the nest
Best lures:
Texas-rigged worms
Creature baits
Tube jigs
Tip: Bass get territorial—slow presentations work best.
3. Post-Spawn (late spring)
Bass are tired but still feeding, especially females recovering
Males guard fry near shallow cover
Best lures:
Topwater (early morning)
Swimbaits
Wacky-rigged worms
Tip: Look for fry balls or baitfish activity near cover.
Where to Fish
Shallow flats near deeper water
Laydowns (fallen trees)
Docks and vegetation
Rocky banks that warm up faster

Overcast days can be productive all day

Bass behavior in spring is driven more by water temp than the calendar. A few warm days can suddenly turn the bite on.
