Wheeler Lake Prespawn Bass Fishing (March 1st) | Bait Everywhere but Only Caught GIANT Drum?!
March 1st on Wheeler Lake and the prespawn bite should be heating up… right?!
My wife and I hit the water chasing early prespawn bass. We found huge schools of baitfish, birds diving everywhere, and all the signs that screamed “BASS ARE HERE.” But the bite was tough.
Instead of loading the boat with largemouth or smallmouth, we ended up boating 15+ big freshwater drum — and they were absolute tanks. Not exactly what we were targeting, but they made for an action-packed day!
In this video:
• How we located schooling bait
• What the birds told us about fish positioning
• Why the bass wouldn’t commit
• The baits and techniques we used
• And how to adjust when you’re catching the “wrong” species
Prespawn fishing can be unpredictable, but there are always lessons to learn on the water. If you fish the Tennessee River system, this one’s for you.

Would you rather catch 15 drum or grind it out for one big bass?
