Bass fishing tournaments have built a culture where speed is king and safety is an afterthought. Boats running seventy miles per hour on public water with no speed limits. Blast-offs in low-visibility conditions. Formats that punish you for slowing down. And organizations that put out a press release after someone dies and move on to the next event.
In April 2025, a tournament bass boat killed three men on Alabama’s Smith Lake during an MLF event. The same morning, another tournament angler crashed into a boat on Lake Norman. Months earlier, a twenty-one-year-old college angler died during a Bassmaster practice round in fog. The wrongful death lawsuit that followed alleges the tournament organization had no speed limits, no safety plan, and no boating license requirements for its competitors.
This is the conversation nobody in tournament bass fishing wants to have. Who is responsible when the format itself is the danger?
