Squarebill crankbaits are especially effective in the fall for a few key reasons:
1. Shad and Baitfish Movement
In fall, many fish species (like bass) are feeding heavily to bulk up before winter. A lot of these fish are targeting shad or other small baitfish that are actively moving in shallow water. Squarebills, with their wide wobble and erratic action, mimic these baitfish, making them irresistible to predator fish.
2. Shallow Water Targeting
During the fall, fish often move into shallower water to feed, especially near cover like rocks, submerged vegetation, or wood. Squarebill crankbaits are great for covering these shallow zones because of their design. They have a short, wide bill that makes them deflect off of structures, creating that erratic, unpredictable motion that fish find hard to resist.
3. Versatile Presentation
Squarebills can be fished at various depths, depending on how fast or slow you retrieve them. If fish are deeper, you can work the bait lower in the water column, and if they’re in the shallows, a slower retrieve keeps it closer to the surface. This versatility allows you to adjust based on the fish’s behavior.
4. Temperature Drop
As water temperatures start to drop in fall, bass and other predator fish often become more aggressive in their feeding habits, trying to pack on calories before winter. Squarebills tend to provoke strikes because of their noisy, attention-grabbing qualities. The rattles or clacking of the lure’s internal components can also trigger strikes from fish that are in a feeding frenzy.
5. Mimicking the Fall “Fleeing” Behavior
As the weather cools, smaller baitfish like shad can become more stressed and start to scatter, fleeing from predators. A squarebill’s erratic action, combined with its deflections off cover, closely resembles this fleeing movement, making it a perfect match for fall fishing.
