With clouds brooding overhead, the wind picking up as the storm teased the horizon. At Cottonwood Cove, Lake Mojave, we weighed our options, the decision heavy in the air like the humidity around us. A storm was forming, its presence undeniable—but the promise of bass action was just as strong.

We made the call: go for it.

Kayaks ready, rods were rigged, and we sliced across the darkening water toward our favorite coves. The pre-storm conditions turned out to be perfect—cooler temps, stirred-up shallows, and that electric pressure change that seems to switch the bass into feeding mode.

It paid off. Cast after cast, we pulled in some solid largemouths, smallmouths and stripers aggressive strikes coming near submerged structure and windblown points. Ned Rigs, Texas rigs, and Jerk Baits were all hitting. The fish were fired up, and so were we.
