I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I’ve been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I’ve qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

  1. I love fishing a football jig in the local canals. There's almost no structure in them except the weeds on the bottom in the center. I was new to fishing a jig and kept getting hung up in the weeds, so thinking I wasn't going to get bit I yanked the jig free of the weeds and all of a sudden the weeds pulled back…I thought, wait a second, weeds don't pull back! My first catch on that jig was a large mouth at 6lbs 12 oz! Great info, thanks for sharing!

  2. I really enjoy watching your videos. They have helped me out. I would to see you do a video on how to fish a football jig. I recently started fishing them, but haven't had any luck. I don't know what I'm going wrong. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Keep the good videos coming and good luck in your tournaments.

  3. Huge amount of bites come from a triple pop fall or pop fall. Important to let it free fall, lots of people keep it to high in column it’s a jig. Very informative for any level.

  4. Matt, I love getting my jig hung up in the grass and snapping it out with a stroke. When imitating a crawfish, I will snap it twice so it imitates a fleeing craw. The stroking technique has saved me on non aggressive days with reaction bites!

  5. Fortunately, I’ll never be afraid of the jig. lol.
IMHO, the most fun way to fish. Although I’ve altered size and profile over the years due to tougher bites from over fishing, but the jig is will will probably always be my go to. .The only time I shy away from a jig is in heavy weed. By me it’s milfoil, contain, pondweed, hydride, etc. Then I will use a T-Rig that closely matches a jig. Like a skirted double tail grim or a beaver or craw type bait. Just to keep from picking up the weed.

  6. Jig fishing might just be the most productive kind of fishing for multiple species as well.. you might target bass but could end up woth litterally anything.. i just started with jigs last year and i catch more fish with jigs than anything else by far.. could just be the fish in my lake however that like them😂

  7. I think the jig excels with a short hop and quick hops. One other way that works is to drag it quickly on the bottom to create a muddy trail. Then just deadstick it for a few seconds and then do it again. You can throw in pops too

  8. I just watched your Wisconsin trip and you was using a left hand reel while pitching a jig to wood? In this video you're using a right hand reel retrieve. Are you ambidextrous with fishing reels?

  9. Very enlightening! Thank you for the detailed info! Demonstrating these retrieves while narrating your tips and instructions makes this a great jig fishing lesson. Definitely going to put these lessons into practice.
    Thank you Thank you!

  10. Sweet video. I've been using a football jig and casting jig to burn the flats. I have a 8:3:1 reel. I turn the handle super fast for half a rotation or a full rotation. Then I let it sit. So the jig looks like a fast tadpole or guppy. They react with a fast bite, then I pause it when I feel them bite, watch the line move, then set the hook.

  11. You forgot the most productive retrieve, Rod tip low. Not a drag but a jerk. jerk. It keeps your jig looking like a crawfish, scoot, scoot. I hope this tip helps you catch more bass. Oh, it works best with a heavier football jig, Of course not for any heavy cover or weeds. Good luck and let me know how this works for you.

  12. Have been fishing with both bass jigs and chatterbaits many times over the years. Have never even had a strike on either. Not in creeks, small ponds, watershed lakes, and large reservoirs, deep, shallow, whatever. Bunch of hooey about how great each are. PR and such, with folks that do being the only ones you hear about. Waste of lead.

  13. Matt could you set me up with a outstanding jig set up .I really dont do much jigs but really getting into it now.I would need your rod, best reel you would recommend if you don't mind.Thank you

  14. I'm not sure how you can "know" you'll "generate more strikes" doing any one thing over the other…. now if you wanted to say "it might get you more strikes" I'd be on board.
