4 Underspin Tricks To Catch More Bass! Bonus Underwater Footage!

Catching BIG bass when everyone else is catching small fish is easy! Are you tired of keitech swimbaits getting torn? Which heads are best for ledge fishing? Did you know you can use blade size and color to change how a bass eats, not just when a bass eats? Do blades even move when bottom fishing? Does it matter? All of this and more in today’s information-packed video on Fall Underspin fishing for bass!

The Underspin is one of the most underrated lures in bass fishing. Most clear water fishermen assume its too flashy and most muddy water fishermen don’t realize their fish can find it. If you’re one of the lucky ones that has given this technique a try during its recent resurgence, you already know how amazing it can be! The under spin may be the most versatile of all reaction baits. It has an effective range with water temps from high 30’s all the way up to 80+ degrees. It can be fished in 50+ feet of water but is equally effective in just inches of water around vegetation.

The key to the underspin is in the subtle nuances. For example, the River2Sea D Walker will cause the bait to rock, roll, and flash more than any other bait we’ve ever seen. The keitech will get bit at virtually any speed and with the quick “spring trick” in this video, can last through dozens of fish. The Blade Runner Spintrix will draw fish with its incredible head wobble but when conditions change the Hog Farmer will catch them with its stable action. Pay attention to the details in this video and you will catch way more bass this Fall!

  1. Hey Matt, just saw this video for the first time. I started using an underspin last year and now I always have one tied on. What length of leader do you recommend if using braid? Thanks!

  2. Been fishing underspins for as long as I can remember. One of my favorites is the originator that I didn't hear you mention and thats the roadrunner either the plain underspin or the bucktail. Both work good but the roadrunner bucktail is probably my favorite I've caught a bunch of different species in both fresh and saltwater on that bait mainly with a simple twister tail for a trailer.

  3. Matt, I've been fishing the Coolbaits since they came out. I recently noticed they now make an "XL" version… All you're videos talk about the Coolbaits yet when it comes to the heavier underpins ( 3/8 – 1/2oz ) you seem to opt for different brands… Is there a reason you don't use the Coolbaits XL ? Thanks

  4. Watched 15 times. Took notes. Spent money. Caught a big smally where other guys didn't. Planning to go back and get more. Still learning. This is my first real learning bass year. Thanks a lot.

  5. I really appreciate the information. Also I really appreciate your in depth analysis of why these techniques help catch more bass. All around one of the best channels about educating anglers on YouTube. Also I really appreciate that you are so humble and modest especially since you are so educated about modifications to baits and where the application helps catch more fish. Please keep up the great work.

  6. You know your a true fishermen when you feel bad about your shredded bait! Say a little prayer, say goodbye and give it a water burial or or as a sacrifice to the fishing gods 🧜‍♂️

  7. Man, your videos are absolutely the best. Great information and we'll put together. Just got the swim baits in now just need to get the underspin rigs and going to give this a try in a few weeks when the weather changes

  8. Using a white hair jig .125 oz on a beetle spin ( fishing for crappie ) hit a 4 LB + large mouth …snap went the tip of my UL rod moral of the story always check your DRAG…LOL

  9. Thank you Matt! You are the man! I’ve never thrown underspins, but picked up some 1/4 eco pro under spins in Shad, and 2.8 fat impact kietch in Shad to try when the time is right. The Shad here are tiny, so finesses is probably the way. Thanks for what you do!

  10. I have some questions. #1 Does it not matter that some of those baits have two eyes on each side? That doesn't look "normal" or natural. #2 What's the point of having hook size standards if they vary from brand to brand? #3 what's the difference between leader line and using regular line for a leader? Thanks.

  11. I live on a large lake that I know have bass. My neighbor says he has seen large bass. I have tried just about everything. Cranks, spinners, jerks, swim, and I even throw live baby brim. Not a single strike. Frustrated,!

  12. Thanks Matt for the great under spin lesson. I fished a 3/0 flashy swimmer with a 3.8 Keitech today in our club tournament. I had never fished an under spin before but I am glad I did today on lake Hartwell. I won the tournament and caught the big fish, a 4.4lb largemouth! Thanks again and keep up the good work. JBowen

  13. Btw our Illinois State Record smallie was caught late Monday night in downtown Chicago. Epic and I mean Epic amounts of effort by a large number of us to assist in keeping her alive to be released this morning back into the lake. She spent all day yesterday and last night getting the spa treatment with assistance from IDNR biologists to make sure she had fully recovered. Google Chicago Suntimes new smallmouth record including her release video. It was incredible to be apart of it

  14. I dunno about underspin… I thought the whole point of a spinner was to reflect light to mimic the way fish scales will flash when sunlight hits at the right angle? But if the fish is under the spinner, sunlight won't reflect downward will it? It can only reflect up back towards the light source.

Also, since you ask what type of videos we'd like to see, if you've never done this before could you do a video or series on what specifically each type of bait is imitating in terms of natural food sources for fish? Like what is a ned rig or a senko imitating, or a spinner, etc. I feel like understanding what your bait is trying to imitate will help people better fish with that bait.

  15. Im known around my area for using underspins 99% of the time regardless of location and time lol. Caught everything from big bass, smallies, gar, to catfish and walleye. Deffinitely my favorite all around bait.
Fish it however u want and it will get bit!!!
