3 Bass in 30 Minutes | High-Percentage Bank Fishing Spots for Largemouth

Over the holidays, I made a quick trip to a small private lake to do some bank fishing for largemouth bass. With limited time, the goal was simple: focus only on the highest-percentage spots instead of trying to cover everything.

I start by fishing the corners of the lake where the shoreline meets the dam—classic bank fishing structure that often holds fish. One side is noticeably deeper than the other, and that difference plays out in the size of the bass I catch. Normally I’d work the entire dam, but today I’m just hitting the best spots.

To wrap it up, I head to one of the most reliable places you can fish from the bank: below the spillway. Whether it’s a massive dam on a big river or a small pond like this one, the water below a dam is almost always worth your time. Growing up in New Jersey, we used to call these spots “gate holes,” and I spent many afternoons doing a milk run of them—moving from one to the next and catching some surprisingly good fish.

Three bass in about half an hour, all from the bank. Nothing huge, but a solid reminder that bank fishing is seriously underrated. If you know where to fish—and don’t have time to mess with a boat—it can absolutely pay off.
